белково-липидная структура молекулярных размеров (не более 10 нм толщиной), расположенная на поверхности клеток (клеточная мембрана, окружающая протоплазму живой клетки), канальцев и пузырьков в клеточном содержимом, а также внутриклеточных образований (ядра, митохондрий и др.). Б.м. состоит из бимолекулярного липидного слоя (в основном из фосфолипидов) толщиной 35 ангстрем и двух нелипидных слоев толщиной 20 ангстрем каждый; внешняя поверхность многих Б.м. покрыта мукополисахаридами, а внутренняя поверхность выстлана структурным или ферментным белком. Б.м. митохондрий несколько отличается по структуре от поверхностной клеточной мембраны. Б.м. занимает огромную площадь (напр., в организме человека только поверхностные мембраны имеют площадь, равную десяткам тыс. м 2) и выполняет несколько функций: барьерную функцию, которая заключается в обеспечении селективного, регулируемого, пассивного и активного обмена веществ клетки с окружающей средой; матричную функцию, обеспечивающую взаимное расположение и ориентацию мембранных белков, а также их оптимальное взаимодействие (напр., взаимодействие мембранных ферментов); механическую функцию, определяющую прочность и автономность клеток и внутриклеточных структур; энергетическую функцию, заключающуюся в обеспечении синтеза АТФ в клетке (см. аденозинтрифосфат) на внутренних мембранах митохондрий и фотосинтез углеводов в мембранах хлоропластов; генерацию и проведение биопотенциалов; рецепторную функцию (механическая, акустическая, обонятельная, зрительная, химическая, терморецепция) и многие др.
